HONG KONG – January 25, 2021 – Despite evening restrictions returning to Hong Kong, the wine market continued to prevail, as Acker held a two-part auction this weekend there, with a special, virtual session on Friday night followed by an in-person sale room on Saturday in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Guangzhou. As preparations for Lunar New Year begin, welcoming the incoming Year of the Ox, buyers remained bullish, particularly in regard to the special consignment direct from the cellars of Jean-Louis Chave, which set an impressive 18 New World Records.
The Top Ten Lots of the auction boasted big results for the best bottles of Burgundy, with ten bottles of 1991 Domaine Leroy Musigny taking the top spot while selling for a staggering HK$1,394,400/US$179,923. A twelve bottle 1991 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Assortment case realized a rousing HK$796,800/US$102,813. In third place stood five bottles of 1985 DRC Romanee Conti, which fetched HK$747,000/US$96,387. The fourth spot was shared, as a twelve bottle 1990 DRC Assortment case and a marquis lot of one bottle of every vintage released of Jean-Louis Chave’s Ermitage Cuvee Cathelin (eight bottles) sold for HK$697,200/US$89,961 apiece. Taking the sixth and seventh places were two, rare original wooden cases, as twelve bottles of 1985 DRC La Tache achieved HK$597,600/US77,110 and twelve bottles of 2001 Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant realized HK$547,800/US$70,684. DRC and Leroy continued to duel to the end of the Top Ten lots, as twelve bottles of 1985 DRC Richebourg and six bottles of 1991 DRC La Tache each sold for HK$498,000/US$64,258, followed by twelve bottles of 1971 Maison Leroy Musigny realizing HK$473,100/US$61,045.
The exciting selection direct from the cellars of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave attracted avid attention at the auction, attaining 18 of the impressive 162 New World Records set. With a history dating back to 1481 and the estate now in the hands of its 16th generation, Chave dug deep into their cellars, unearthing three half-bottles of the rarely seen dessert wine, 1997 Hermitage Blanc Vin de Paille, which sold for HK$18,924/US$2,434. From Jean-Louis’ newest project that returns to the Domaine’s historic home in St. Joseph, one Jeroboam of 2018 St. Joseph Clos Florentin sold for HK$12,948/US$1,665. Also of note were three magnums of 2005 Hermitage Blanc, which fetched HK$22,410/US$2,882, three bottles of 1991 Hermitage Rouge for HK$94,620/US$12,170, and one Jeroboam of 1998 Ermitage Cuvee Cathelin for HK$398,400/US$51,241. All of the above lots were New World Records.
“It was a real thrill to represent 28 spectacular lots from Jean-Louis Chave, the greatest producer of Syrah in the world,” exclaimed Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “For 18 of a possible 22 non-mixed lots to set New World Records is extraordinary, and it shows that Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is firmly in the upper echelon of the greatest wine producers in the world. The highlight of my weekend was tasting four bottles from the Domaine, which I know many friends and clients were able to sample in Hong Kong as well. Syrah does not get any better, make that Marsanne and Roussanne, too! This was the perfect precursor to our third annual Grande Fête de Bourgogne on February 4th and 5th, with eleven, exceptional Domaine-direct consignments and virtual tastings with several of these top winemakers on Zoom beginning on February 2nd. With over US$20 million in sales lined up for the first five weeks of 2021, the new year has picked up right where 2020 left off, with Acker firmly in front of the fine and rare wine market.”
