Acker’s May U.S. sale continued to put the bounce in its 2023 spring step, achieving $6.3 Million across two evenings on Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday, May 18. The sale featured many significant collections of the finest and rarest wines, including The Cellar of Bill Nunnelly to Benefit the Naples Children & Education Foundation and Nashville Wine Auction for Cancer Research. It was a collection of extremely rare Methuselahs (6 liter bottles) of Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Chave Cathelin that stole the show, with all five selections appearing in the Top Ten lots and two setting New World Records.
One of the aforementioned Methuselahs, a 1991 DRC La Tache emerged as the frontrunner, commanding the top position in the Top Ten Lots and selling for an impressive $162,500. DRC also claimed spots two and three with a twelve-bottle 1990 DRC Assortment selling for $100,000, and a Methuselah of 1989 Montrachet setting a New World Record at $75,000. The fifth spot was seized by the coveted 2000 J.L. Chave Ermitage Cuvee Cathelin Methuselah, securing $68,750. DRC's presence extended to spots five through seven, showcasing a 1999 Grands Echezeaux Methuselah that fetched $62,500, also a New World Record, then a trio of 1990 DRC Romanee Conti bottles that sold for $60,000, and the final Methuselah from the esteemed collection, a 1990 Romanee St. Vivant, surged to $50,000. The eighth and ninth positions went to five bottles of 1990 Dujac Clos de la Roche ringing in at $37,500, and eight bottles of 1997 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon in OWCs at $35,000. Tenth place was a tie between five bottles of 2004 Domaine Leroy Vosne Romanee and a case of 1995 Petrus, both bringing in $32,500, with the Leroy setting a New World Record.
“The market continues to show up in 2023, demonstrating robust demand for the world’s finest and rarest wines. I am excited to head to Hong Kong next week to present wines direct from the amazing cellar of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, as well as other featured collections that are a worthy follow up to a fantastic May U.S. auction,” commented Acker Chairman John Kapon. “The spring season is coming to a close, but we’re continuing to work on June and July sales so there’s still time to due some cellar thinning before summer!”
Acker’s auction season continues with a live auction in Hong Kong on Friday June 2, a Spirits Sale in New York on Thursday June 8, and a U.S. sale on Tuesday June 20 with an approaching deadline of Friday, May 26.
