Three of the top performing lots in the September NY Auction:
Lot 1187, 1188: 3 bottles each 2001 and 2006 DRC Romanee Conti in banded OWC
Lot 1323: 1 Methuselah 2001 DRC Montrachet
Lots 1427-1432: 1 Jeroboam each 2005-2010 Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee in OWC

Thirsty bidders were plugged in with the volume on high as Acker exploded into the Fall season with a spectacular sale of $6.6 million and 98% lots sold, exceeding the pre-sale estimate by over 20% and setting 241 New World Records in the process. The auction also kicked off Acker’s Fall charitable initiative working with Citymeals on Wheels, with a virtual cooking demo with co-president of the organization, Chef Daniel Boulud, that led into the first 168 lots of the sale, kicking off Acker’s goal to donate 10,000 meals for New York’s homebound elderly through a variety of auction and retail offerings.

The Top Ten Lots of the auction were a celebrity death match between two of Burgundy’s biggest names, Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, who both represented nine out of the ten Top Lots as well as sixteen of the Top Twenty. The Top Lot of the sale went to a rare Methuselah of 2001 DRC Montrachet, which sold for $55,800. Second place was taken by another DRC specialty, a twelve-bottle 2000 Assortment in a banded original wood case that fetched $52,080. The third through fifth positions were captured by more banded cases of DRC, this time three bottles each of Romanee Conti, as the 2001 and 2006 vintages sold for $49,600 a piece and the 2011 vintage realized $47,120. Sixth and seventh places were taken by World-Record setting Jeroboams of 2005 and 2010 Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee, which sold for $47,120, two of Ten World Records set by one of Burgundy’s most collectible producers. The Comte’s streak continued as twelve bottles of 2007 and six bottles of 2009 La Romanee took the eighth and ninth positions, selling for $42,400 and $39,680 respectively. Rounding out the Top Ten was Bordeaux’s only entrant, a lot of twelve bottles of 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild in original wooden case that realized $39,680. Other coveted producers slipping into the Top Twenty were Rousseau, Raveneau, and Chateau Haut Brion.

Of the extraordinary 241 New World Records set, 77% were achieved by the wines of Burgundy, which continued its dominance of the marketplace. The wines of Roumier captured fifteen New World Records, with Roulot taking twelve, Drouhin eleven, and the aforementioned Comte Liger-Belair ten. This was followed closely with nine records for Leflaive, eight for both DRC and Ramonet, and six each for Dujac and Leroy.

“What a spectacular start to the Fall season,” exclaimed Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “The market continues to get stronger and stronger as 2020 goes on. We often go into an auction with a good sense of where the sales numbers will go. To achieve 20% over the pre-sale estimate is a truly significant milestone. All systems are go for what is shaping up to be as incredible a Fall season as we’ve ever seen, with an even larger sale on tap for Hong Kong on September 24th and 26th followed closely by a superb, single-cellar sale in New York, on Thursday, October 8th. Fasten your seatbelts!”

The auction season continues for Acker with a “live online” auction in Hong Kong on September 24th and 26th, followed closely by a single-cellar sale in New York on October 8th and a second October New York auction on October 24th. Acker is currently accepting wines for November and December “live online” auctions, with weekly web auctions closing every week. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
