Lot 872: 1 magnum 1953 Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Acker kicked off the 2023 auction season with a three-cellar, three-night extravaganza January 17-19. The three and only featured collections of the “Three Kings” auction resulted in a frenzy of bidding activity and nearly $7M in sales featuring a remarkable 245 New World Records. Bidders from all over the world tuned in to bid on these superlative collections comprised of Finest Burgundian Terroirs from The Principal; Royal Treasures of a Lifelong Burgundy Lover; and the third installment of The Exceptional Cellar of John Tilson.

Burgundy reigned supreme as all of the Top Ten Lots went to Domaine de la Romanee Conti with the exception of twelve bottles of 2005 A. Rousseau Chambertin, which collected $56,025 and tied for fifth place with a case of 2011 DRC La Tache. The number one spot went to a twelve-bottle assortment of 1999 DRC in banded OWC ringing in at $87,150. Positions two through four were a magnum of 1966 Romanee Conti at $68,475, three bottles of 2010 Romanee Conti garnering $62,250, and a twelve-bottle 2001 DRC Assortment in banded OWC trading at $59,760. In sixth place was six bottles of 2019 La Tache in banded OWC at $47,310, followed by a six-way DRC tie at $43,575, including six bottles of 2005 La Tache in banded OWC, four lots of six-bottles each 2010 La Tache in banded OWC, and twelve bottles of 2005 Romanee St. Vivant.

Notable lots that blew through their high estimates included a trio of Richebourgs from Acker’s first King, “The Principal,” notably six bottles each of 2019 DRC Richebourg at $34,860, 2018 at $29,880 and 2015 at $32,370. Royal Treasures of a Lifelong Burgundy Lover featured methuselahs of 1964 Pousse d’Or Volnay Clos des 60 Ouvrees and 2006 Mugnier Chambolle Musigny Amoureuses each trading for $22,410, and a case of 2015 Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes Chambertin selling at $19,920, all New World Records. The Exceptional Cellar of John Tilson saw a magnum of 1953 Chateau Lafite Rothschild soar to $29,880; a bottle of DRC Montrachet achieve $13,695, and three bottles of 1978 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill sell at $8,093, again all New World Records. Those were just just the tip of the iceberg, with 40% of lots achieving over high estimate in this titanic auction. Top producers from every wine region contributed to the 245 New World Records in the sale, whose biggest story was forty-six All-Time Highs for the adored jewel from Burgundy, Mugneret-Gibourg.

“With a lot of negative news in the media to start 2023, it was great to see such a positive start for the wine market. The “Three Kings” collections were absolutely superlative in both quantity and quality, and collectors took notice, bidding fiercely for the fine and rare wines on offer,” commented Acker Chairman John Kapon. “Wise bidders traded in their gold, frankincense and myrrh for top Burgundy, Bordeaux, and California, representing a verygood omen for both 2023 and the lucky Year of the Rabbit! Speaking of which, I’m excited to be in Hong Kong for our next live auction on Friday night, February 10th and looking forward to our first ever La Paulée auction on March 2nd and 3rd, which will include numerous live events around and including the auction and feature direct consignments from eighteen of Burgundy’s greatest producers. The forecast for wine is sunny and clear in 2023!”

Acker’s auction season continues with a live auction in Hong Kong on Friday, February 10 and the La Paulée auction on Thursday and Friday March 2-3. Acker is currently accepting wines for its April U.S. and Hong Kong sales. Weekly web auctions close every Friday. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
