The Astounding Abruzzi of Azienda Agricola Valentini
Valentini in Abruzzo has long been a winery shrouded in secrecy: it is rarely open to visitors, their vinification methods are largely unknown, and their wines are released only when they are deemed ready in the most miniscule quantities. They make some of the few Italian whites and roses that arrive (and improve magnificently) with age, and their Montepulciano is bottled only in great vintages!
While biodynamic winemaking inspired by Rudolph Steiner has become fashionable, Francesco's father Edoardo developed his own dynamic natural style in the 1950s, based on Greek philosophy and planted most of the perfectly mature wines in the vineyard around that time.
While other great Italian winemakers have looked to Burgundy for inspiration, the idiosyncratic Valentinis completely eschew the cru system. Instead, they employ a highly rarefied selection of their best grapes to make the singular varietal Trebbiano and Montepulciano. 98% of their grapes are sold off to local co-ops, and they keep only the top two percent to craft their estate wines. These are some of the most eclectic and authentic wines to their varietal and place imported into the United States today!

2011 Valentini Cerasuolo di Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
One of the most expressive ‘rosé’ wines on the market and yes, 2011 IS the current vintage! It was fermented on its lees in 35-year old Slavonian oak barrel, then disgorged after proper aging and rebuffed with carbon dioxide---in the old way! Aromas of nut paste, raspberry, passion fruit, pipe tobacco, ginger and roasted meats envelop the senses. Still fresh acidity buoys flavors of raspberry, blood orange, and spiced nuts on the attack, with a savory, mineral mid-palate, finishing awash in strawberry and pink grapefruit flavors. This complex wine, with a proper chill, is the perfect serious rosé year-round!

2010 Valentini Cerasuolo di Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
“Good pale pink-red. Floral and mineral nuances complicate perfumed aromas of sour red cherry, lemon zest, fresh herbs, violet and minerals. Juicy, sweet and firmly built, with outstanding definition to the flavors of redcurrant, minty herbs, marzipan, and minerals. The tannins are penetrating but sweet and broad, giving a refined quality to this complex red wine. Really impressive Cerasuolo.”
92 points, Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar.

2011 Valentini Trebbiano d’Abruzzo
The sublimely complex bouquet sings notes of flint, white truffle, fig, and nectarine with hints of smoked almond and spicy pear. Impossible to resist with a sweet entry of voluminous citrus fruits and notes of almond, barnyard, stone fruit and roasted nuts on the savory medium bodied, mid-palate. Precise all the way through with a good acid backbone and nice brininess on the finish, this is a serious white wine that does not fail to impress!

2008 Valentini Trebbiano d’Abruzzo
“…has begun to fill out nicely…The aromas and flavors wrap around the palate all the way through to the generous finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.”

2006 Valentini Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (EXTREMELY LIMITED)
You will remember Valentini’s meticulousness regarding the Montepulciano; the 2006 is still the only release in the marketplace. We hope to see a new vintage shortly, but in the meantime, one can enjoy this stellar wine as it slowly approaches maturity! “Fully saturated ruby. Complex nose offers dark cherry, plum sauce, eucalyptus, tobacco and camphor. Dense, rich and powerful, but conveys an impression of energy to its ripe dark fruit, balsamic and vanilla flavors. Sneaky concentration here. Features a very soft, creamy yet sharply delineated mouthfeel perked up by harmonious, lively acidity. Vibrant red cherry and menthol flavors dominate on the long, very smooth finish.”
93+ points, Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar; 94 points, The Wine Advocate.
