Perfectly Off Dry Riesling from Perhaps the World’s Oldest Winery: Staffelter Hof
Staffelter hof has a long history going back to Belgian monks who first realized its potential in 862, finding the vineyards here worth the long journey. The winery has risen to new heights under the dynamic young Jan Klein who has converted the vineyards to certified organic practices and excelled at making wines in a wonderfully balanced, off-dry style. The wines are concentrated, yet light on their feet, have a hint of sweetness on the attack, finishing with refreshingly dry acidity. Patiently, he waits to release the wines while others rush to bottle and circulate their wines.

Staffelter Hof is one of the most active members of the Klitzekleine Ring, or ‘itsy bitsy’ ring, a group of 11 wineries around Traben-Trarbach. As the name implies, the ring doesn’t take itself as seriously as the more formal Bernkastel and VDP Grosser Rings. They hold wine tastings at concerts and embrace social media, but they are very serious in the vineyards. They have started a project to save steep slope vineyards that would otherwise be abandoned, called Bergrettung (a pun on the German name for the alpine rescue services). Jan Klein has contributed greatly to this project.

2012 Riesling Paradies Feinherb
An estate level off-dry wine that possesses great acidity from its steep southeast facing sloped vineyards. The wolf on the label is based on a legend that long ago the Abbot of the Stravelot Monastery that founded Staffelter hof ordered a wolf to carry stones because his donkey had died in the heat. The wolf obliged, and since then has been the 'wappentier,' or guardian, of the winery. This wine is delightfully floral with lemon and a hint of thyme and lots of energy.
Email Price: $16.99 per bottle.

2011 Riesling Kröv Letterlay Kabinett Feinherb
30 year old vines grown on their steepest vineyard site; fermented with indigenous and cultivated yeasts in stainless steel; extended lees aging for a creamy mid-palate. A balanced wine brimming with citrus and orchard fruits that possesses solid acidity for the 2011 vintage. A great wine before, during and after dinner!
Email Price: $22.99 per bottle.

2011 Riesling GeGe Dhron Hofberg
The winery’s top dry to off-dry wine, depending on the quality of the vintage, it may not be made every vintage; can also be from the Steffensberg vineyard, depending on which plot was more successful. It is a pun on GG or Grosses Gewachs, the VDP’s top dry wine designation for Grand Cru. Indigenous yeasts permeate a mixture of stainless steel and fuder; a very late picked wine that in this vintage is three/fourths dry, weighing in at 13% alcohol, without any signs of heaviness. It is quite stony, smooth and long, approachable now and will cellar well.
Email Price: $32.99 per bottle.
