Acker Hong Kong Auction Results

Hong Kong, SAR – 10 June 2018 – When a beautiful vertical collection of Chateau Margaux hammered down early in the day’s auction, Acker Merrall & Condit Company surpassed the US$1 Billion threshold in total global wine auction sales since its first wine auction in New York City in 1998. That $1 Billion sales mark aptly reflects the firm’s Number One position in the global wine auction market during the past decade. This $1 Billion achievement also sets the stage for Acker Merrall’s largest auction of 2018, as $8 million of the World’s Greatest Wines will be offered in New York City on June 20th, led by the remarkable European collection of “The Billion Dollar Man.” The breadth and depth of this collection spans mature and more recent Bordeaux, Burgundy including a significant offering of Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Rhone and other European, Californian and Australian treasures, many of which are case lots or wines rarely seen in the market.

Acker Merrall’s June 9th Hong Kong auction also witnessed a passionate Hong Kong welcome for the wines of the Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The Comte Louis Michel Liger-Belair himself returned to Hong Kong, bringing with him another rare, direct consignment from his cellars in Burgundy, and the bidding on his lots were more ferocious than ever. Collectors Worldwide recognize that the Domaine’s wines are amongst the greatest and most delicious Burgundies made this century since Louis Michel resurrected his family’s Domaine in 2002. The results more than doubled the presale estimate! These special wines from a gifted winemaker continue to gain the acclaim they more than deserve.

“This was a very special auction and an important day for us. I never would have believed when we held our first independent auction in 1998 that I would one day be on the podium in the great city of Hong Kong achieving $1 Billion of total wine auction sales. That first sale was $1.3 Million, and that first year was $4.6M. To be here after that very small start in 1998 is unbelievable,” gushed Acker Merrall and Condit Companies Chairman, John Kapon. “I cannot thank all of our friends and clients enough. We have never lost our passion for the greatest wines of the world, and we will continue to be their greatest ambassador. This would be a good time to go on a vacation, but we will be back at it June 20th in New York City, continuing our month long celebration of this amazing accomplishment. Speaking of amazing, we look forward to the special evening session for “The Billion Dollar Man,” our featured collection in our largest auction of the year!”

The Top Ten lots from the June 9th Hong Kong auction reflected the continued strength of the 2018 bull market and Burgundy’s dominance of it. The auction’s top lot was a three way tie for first place, all three of which were appropriately Romanee Conti and all of which sold for HK$$595,200/US$76,800: a super rare jeroboam of 1995 Romanee Conti and two magnums each of 2000 and 2001 Romanee Conti, all of which were New World Records. Wines from DRC set an impressive 23 New World Records overall. The next four lots in the Top Ten were also once again tied, all selling for HK$545,600/US$70,400: two twelve bottle lots of 2005 DRC La Tache and two magnums each of 2004 and 2007 Romanee Conti. These were followed by a three bottle lot of 1999 Romanee Conti that was bought for HK$496,000/US$64,000. Completing the Top 10 Lots were a twelve bottle lot of 2009 DRC La Tache, a thirteen bottle vertical collection of 1945-1957 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, and three magnums of rare 1985 Dujac Clos de la Roche, all of which sold for HK$446,400/US$57,600.
