New York City, NY – September 10th, 2018 – Burgundy didn’t take a vacation this summer in the minds of collectors worldwide, as demand for these Domaines continued unabated during Acker Merrall’s first auction of the Fall Season.  The auction totaled over US$7 Million, led by the Amazing Collection of Wilf Jaeger, one of the World’s most renowned Burgundy connoisseurs, a collection that surged past its high estimate thanks to over 300 lots of the finest and rarest Burgundies within.  An astounding 312 New World Records were set in this momentous sale, and all twenty-five of the top lots were from Burgundy.  Almost one-third of all non-mixed lots set World Records, and the 312 lots represent a record number for Acker Merrall for any given sale.  The sale set the stage for Acker’s first Hong Kong auction of the Fall season on September 22, which features an extraordinary amount of wines from Domaine de la Romanee Conti.

All of the sale’s Top Ten Lots were from Burgundy; in fact, so were the Top 25.  Rousseau took the top three spots, led by a unique 45-bottle vertical collection from 1964 to 2015 of Chambertin which sold for $124,000.  That was followed by a twelve bottle OCB of 1990 Rousseau Chambertin selling for $93,000, and a extremely rare jeroboam of 1959 Rousseau Chambertin trading for $74,400.  The Domaine de la Romanee Conti’s 1999 Assortment in banded OWC sold for $62,000, as did an OWC of 2009 Domaine Leroy Richebourg from the collection of Wilf Jaeger.  His amazing collection was also the previous home for the two lots which followed, a twelve bottle lot of 1999 Henri for Georges Jayer Echezeaux bought for $55,800 and a 3-bottle banded OWC of the 2002 Romanee Conti which sold for $52,080.  During a day of many sought after Dujac lots, the number eight slot was taken by a rare six magnum OWC of Dujac Chambertin selling for $47,120.  Completing the day’s Top 10 and the clean sweep for Burgundy was a Jeroboam of 1991 DRC La Tache at $44,640 and another rare Rousseau vertical collection, 34-bottles of Gevrey Chambertin Clos St. Jacques between 1964 and 2013 at $43,400.

The firm’s 312 New World Records was its highest total ever since tracking and almost one-third of the entire auction’s non-mixed lots, an astounding amount.  Domaine Dujac led the day’s total with 26, while Leroy/d’Auvenay was a close second with 24.  There were 11 records for Drouhin, 10 each for Rousseau and Ramonet, 8 too for both Roumier and DRC plus 6 each for d’Angerville and Roulot, showing the breadth and depth of demand up and down the Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune in Burgundy.

“Now that is exactly the way to start an auction season!  The records keep coming in this record breaking year for Acker, and every major client worldwide sought a piece of Wilf Jaeger’s amazing collection,” exuded John Kapon, Chairman of Acker Merrall and Condit Companies.  “We set an astounding 312 New World Records while selling over $7 million, and we are not even close to being finished with September!  Next up, Hong Kong on September 22nd!  And wait until you see the largest and most important collection in HK – ‘One of the World’s Greatest Collections – First Growths, Petrus and DRC’ in Lots 250-331 in our catalog.  It is truly exceptional and a heavy hitting follow up to Wilf’s collection!”
