Hong Kong, SAR – December 10th 2018 – Collectors were clearly making a list and checking it twice for their holiday wine wish list, and the two names that mattered most were Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Domaine Leroy at Acker Merrall’s final 2018 Hong Kong auction this past weekend. Collections holding the “King and Queen of Burgundy” sold impressively well throughout the auction as prices for these two iconic Domaines continued their climb upward. Twenty-six New World Records were set for Domaine Leroy and thirteen for DRC, reinforcing one of the strongest auction trends of 2018. A consignment direct from the cellars of Chateau de la Tour in the heart of Clos Vougeot also tickled Burgundy lovers’ fancies, setting six more New World Records as well. An estimated HK$43 million/US$5.5 million of sales achieved in Hong Kong sales precede Acker’s finale in New York City this Wednesday, December 12th, with yet another auction of the World’s Greatest Wines just ahead from Acker.

The auction’s Top Ten Lots were dominated by a roster of great Domaines from Burgundy. A lot of three bottles of 2005 Domaine Leroy Musigny was the Top Lot of the auction, selling for HK$471,200/US$60,800, followed by a rare magnum of the already legendary 2015 Romanee Conti that was bought for HK$421,600/US$54,400. A twelve bottle lot of the 1999 G. Roumier Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses followed at HK$396,800/US$51,200. This price was equaled by the four lots which followed: twelve bottles of 1996 Henri Jayer Echezeaux, five bottles of 1996 Henri Jayer Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux, six bottles of 1999 DRC La Tache and three bottles of 2006 DRC Romanee Conti. Completing the Top 10 Lots were three more lots from the Domaine de la Romanee Conti, ten bottles of 2002 DRC La Tache as well as 1995 and 2000 DRC Assortments, each of which were bought for HK$372,000/US$48,000.

A direct consignment from the heart of Clos Vougeot and the cellars of Chateau de la Tour created additional excitement on the sales floor. There were six lots of the extremely rare Hommage a Jean Morin, where only fifty cases are made on average, and that has only been released from three vintages so far. An exceptional highlight was a Nebuchadnezzar (fifteen liters) of its first vintage 2010, which sold for HK $99,200/US$12,800. Collectors also competed for mature lots such as two bottles of the gorgeous 1949 Clos Vougeot that was bought for HK$16,864/$2,176, and six beautiful magnums of the 1985 Clos Vougeot which sold for HK $64,480/US$8,320. Proprietor and winemaker Francois Labet was personally in Hong Kong, generously opening numerous great wines from his private collection.

“This auction was a Royal Flush! The King and Queen of Burgundy, the Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Domaine Leroy, generated a wealth of excitement this weekend thanks to absolutely gorgeous lots of both being offered. It’s clear that collectors cannot get enough from either Domaine,” said Acker Merrall and Condit Companies Chairman John Kapon. “Chateau de la Tour came up Aces, led by its distinguished owner and winemaker, Francois Labet. His wines showed fantastically throughout the week, and collectors responded accordingly. Bordeaux continued to prove itself to be a Jack of all Trades, as demand continued its trend of increasing this year. Indeed, this auction was a Perfect Ten! The shot clock says less than three days and counting before we finish 2018 in New York City on December 12th. There’s still time for some self gifting and indulgence before the year is over, and we expect collectors to give themselves more year end bonuses!”
