NEW YORK—Feb. 4, 2019— Thirsty bidders packed the auction room at Manhattan’s Vaucluse Restaurant on Friday, February 1st for the culmination of Acker's week-long “Grande Fete de Bourgogne,” an annual celebration of Burgundy’s best wines. This annual celebration presented rare opportunities to experience the world’s most extraordinary Burgundies, with this year studded by tastings and dinners including a legendary 20-vintage vertical of Coche-Dury Meursault-Perrieres, an evening with Charles Van Canneyt of Hudelot-Noellat and a 36-vintage vertical of Domaine Georges Roumier Bonnes-Mares. The week culminated in Friday’s auction, setting 213 New World Records and an estimated US$6.5M of sales.

With standing-room only attendance and buyers participating digitally from every corner of the globe, collectors clamored to bid on Domaine-Direct lots from seven of Burgundy's elite producers: Clos de la Chapelle, de Montille, Duroche, Fourrier, Henri Gouges, Meo Camuzet and Comte Liger-Belair, and the hammers did not disappoint. Each of the seven producers from the Domaine-Direct parcel secured World Records in the auction, achieving 34 records overall for 92% of total possible lots for the group.  Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair led this esteemed pack with 12 New World Records, most notably Lot 770, a magnum of 2015 Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee, which sold for $19,840. A rare magnum of 1990 Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux from Domaine Meo-Camuzet also created a bidding frenzy until its final price of $10,540. Comte Liger-Belair led all producers with 16 New World Records overall, followed by Meo-Camuzet and Domaine Leroy each with 14, Drouhin and Dujac with 12 apiece, and the Montrachets from Domaine Ramonet also set nine.

The great wines of Domaine Dujac accounted for three of the five top hammers in the auction, with 6-pack magnums of 1985 Dujac Clos St. Denis and Bonnes Mares selling for $130,200 and $124,000, respectively, and 6 magnums of 1979 Clos St. Denis for $62,000, all New World Records. A 12-bottle case of 1990 Coche-Dury Corton Charlemagne was the third highest-selling lot at $86,800, also a New World Record. As is customary, global superstar Domaine de la Romanee Conti took its position in the Top Five with a 12-bottle DRC Assortment of the 1999 vintage, selling for $62,000.

The auction, New York’s first live auction of the year, follows Acker’s record-breaking 2018 with $125M in total revenue and more than 2,150 New World Records, surpassing the US$1 Billion lifetime mark as an auction firm. Said John Kapon, Chairman of Acker Merrall & Condit Companies, “The Grande Fete is one of my favorite auctions every year. Bidders come to New York from all over the world to celebrate the most influential region in the fine wine auction market, and the records set really reflected that fact. Close to 80% of the total world records in the auction belonged to Burgundy, which means that there’s no question that the top wines of the world are still pouring out of this extraordinary region, from these extraordinary winemakers, and smart collectors are really tuned in. With almost US$15 Million of sales in the first 32 days of the year, 2019 is already looking like another great vintage for the wine market, and for Acker.”

In March, Acker brings two more spectacular sales to New York on the 2nd and Hong Kong on the 23rd. For more information and to register to bid, visit www.ackerwines.com.
