Hong Kong, SAR – April 29, 2019 – A strong market remained steady as Acker sold more than HK$30 million/US$4million of iconic fine and rare wines over the weekend. The auction’s Top Lots saw an appearance from the Northern Rhône, while Domaine de la Romanee Conti—the crown jewel of Burgundy—continued its reign in the auction room at Acker’s Hong Kong sale on Saturday, April 27. The top hammers came down on one of the most famous wines made in France in the past 100 years—a rare six-bottle OWC of the 1961 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle, and a 10-bottle lot of 2005 DRC La Tache, both selling for HK$421,600/US$54,400.
DRC continued its domination of the Top Ten with a two-bottle lot of the 2015 Romanee Conti selling for HK$396,800/US$51,200, and two successive three-bottle OWCs of 2011 and 2014 Romanee Conti selling for HK$372,000/$48,000 each. A 12-bottle lot of the 2007 DRC Assortment brought HK$347,200/US$44,800. Other top Burgundy highlights included a six-bottle OWC of 2015 DRC La Tache purchased for HK$272,800/US$35,200, and a 10-bottle lot of 1998 Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant selling for HK$248,000/US$32,000.
Collectors put Bordeaux at the top of their must-have list as a 12-bottle lot of the renowned 1982 Lafite Rothschild sold for HK $297,600/US$38,400, making it the third-highest selling lot on Saturday. Three double magnums in OWC of the 2000 Mouton Rothschild were a strong showing, taking the hammer at HK$218,240/US$28,160.
“The market continues to hum along to the sweetest of melodies,” said Acker chairman John Kapon. “We continue to see strong demand in Asia for the finest wines in the world, especially beyond the traditional Bordeaux and Burgundies. That is a good sign for our month of May, as it will feature two incredible auctions, our first auction of only Fine and Rare Spirits in Hong Kong, and an unparalleled offering of the iconic Sine Qua Non in New York.”
On May 11, the auction house will conduct “Acker Distilled,” its first dedicated Fine and Rare Spirits event with 300 lots of highly collectible bottles, including a special experience package devoted to Pappy Van Winkle, the most coveted Bourbon on the planet. On May 15, a singular focus will be on arguably the greatest single consignment of Sine Qua Non ever offered, with proceeds given to two charities chosen in conjunction with producers Manfred and Elaine Krankl.
“The selection of spirits for our May 11th Hong Kong auction is most impressive; the amount of boutique, small batch productions available is quite breathtaking. And the exceptional collection of Sine Qua Non is likely the greatest in depth, breadth, and formats ever to be offered at auction,” Kapon said. “We are honored to be the firm chosen to make this possible. May looks to be another magical month for Acker!”
