Hong Kong, SAR – MAY 13, 2019 – Hong Kong’s thirst for fine and rare spirits was tested with stellar results on Saturday, May 11, when Acker held its first dedicated spirits auction. Titled “Acker Distilled,” the inaugural event featured 300 remarkable lots of the most sought-after spirits: ultra-rare whiskies and cognacs, and an American icon in bourbon.
The world’s most coveted names in Scotch and Japanese whiskies were on the block, including Macallan, Yamazaki, Karuizawa and Bowmore. The sale’s Top 10 Lots reflected collectors’ and connoisseurs’ collective demand for noble spirits. The highest selling lot was a modern icon of which only 250 were made: the Hennessy 8 Baccarat Decanter, which sold for HK$595,200/US$76,800. Two rare bottlings of Macallan followed, with the 1950 Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky 52 Year Old selling for HK$322,400/US$41,600 and the 1940 Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky 35 Year Old hammering for HK$297,600/US$38,400. A six-bottle lot of the legendary Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask Whisky followed at HK$248,000/US$32,000. Successive lots of Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky—1951 and 1940 (the latter bottled in 1980 by Gordon & MacPhail for HM Queen Elizabeth’s 80th birthday)— illustrated the unabated demand for the brand, with both selling for HK $223,200/US$28,800. A full set of prized bottlings from Buffalo Trace’s Pappy Van Winkle that included the rare 25 Year Old, packaged with a private cask selection and a VIP Tour at the distillery, also sold for HK $223,200/US$28,800. Other top purchases included: The Bowmore Single Malt Scotch Whisky 44 Year Gold, HK$178,560/US$23,040; 1946 Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky 52 Year old Select Reserve, HK$158,720/US$20,480; and the 1964 Bowmore Single Malt Scotch Whisky for HK$148,800/US$19,200.
“It felt like the first time, because it was! Our first dedicated spirits auction was indubitably a success, with over $1M of sales of the world’s finest and rarest whiskeys, cognacs and more. The demand for the most prestigious names, and a strong interest in rare, small batch offerings made for one exciting afternoon,” said Acker chairman John Kapon. “While my expertise has been deeply rooted in the world of wine, I have to say the prices collectors are willing to pay for the rarest spirits are far greater. These spirits are even rarer than the rarest wines, and they can be consumed over long periods of time.” Kapon recently authored “Why Brown Spirits Is A White-Hot Market” in forbes.com.
“This auction puts us in high spirits—not only for a repeat performance in the future, but also for next week’s New York auction, which features an unparalleled offering of the iconic Sine Qua Non and a deep inventory of Domaine Romanee Conti from the cellars of a celebrity chef,” he said.
The May 15 auction puts a singular focus on the most significant consignment of Sine Qua Non ever offered, with proceeds given to two charities chosen in conjunction with the consignor and winery owners Manfred and Elaine Krankl.
