Hong Kong, SAR – September 23rd 2019 – Bidders in Hong Kong proved once again that the city still represents one of the world’s most important wine markets, as over 400 attendees bought over US$6M/HK$45M of wine at Acker’s first Hong Kong auction of the Fall season. Despite concerns over recent ongoing protests, buyers eagerly showed up and set 150 New World Records at the auction.
The Domaine de la Romanee Conti continued its reign amongst the auction’s Top 10 Lots. In a tie for the auction’s number one lot were a Methuselah of the 2005 DRC La Tache in OWC and a rare Nebuchadnezzar (15L) of 2000 Chateau Mouton Rothschild in OWC, both of which sold for HK$595,200/US$76,800. Four DRC Assortments in OWC followed - 1990, 1999, a very rare 2008 OWC of magnums and the 1993, which respectively sold for HK$545,600/US$70,400, HK$496,000/US$64,000, HK$471,200/US$60,800 and HK$446,400/US$57,600. Six magnums in OWC of 1990 Chateau Petrus followed at HK$421,600/US$54,400, and a Methuselah in OWC of the 1989 DRC La Tache sold for HK$396,800/US$51,200. Completing the Top 10 were OWCs of 1989 and 1990 Chateau Petrus which sold for HK$372,000/US$48,000 and HK$347,200/US$44,800.
One of the sale’s highlights was the personal wine collection of legendary German wine importer Rudi Wiest, marking the second significant offering of the importer’s collection by Acker, and the first time in Hong Kong. Rare lots of 1976 J.J. Prum Graacher Himmelreich TBA, 1995 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese, 2005 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Trockenbeerenauslese, 1971 bottles of Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Beerenausele GK and half bottles of 1975 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese GK all set New World Records amongst the 29 New World Records set for German wines thanks to Rudi Wiest.
“It was great to be back in Hong Kong this past week! Reports of its demise have been greatly exaggerated. Everyone is eager to get back to business,” said Acker Chairman John Kapon. “To have such an immense turnout in the room over two days and two sessions made me tingle, and we are ready to follow it up in November in even finer fashion. On November 2nd, we will return for our second Spirits only, “Acker Distilled” auction, and then the next weekend on November 9th we will hold our second Fine and Rare wine auction of the season. One of the most important winemakers in the world will be joining us in Hong Kong for an unprecedented direct offering from his Domaine, but you’ll hear more about that in the coming week!”
