New York, NY – November 25, 2019 – “The Birthday Auction,” Acker’s Thursday, November 21st NYC sale, was celebrated with gusto as over 100 bidders crowded a packed Vaucluse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in celebration of the world’s finest wine, and Chairman John Kapon’s 48th birthday. Big bottles were popped and poured throughout the hours long auction, which featured a cache of incredible Burgundian collections featuring Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Armand Rousseau and Coche-Dury, among many others.
The Top 10 Lots were packed with wines from the inimitable Domaine de la Romanée Conti, which took five of the Top Ten positions, with Burgundy sweeping the Top 10 overall. The top lot of the sale was 12 bottles of 2005 DRC La Tache, which sold for $68,200. The wines of Armand Rousseau performed incredibly, taking the second-place slot with 12 bottles of 2015 Armand Rousseau Chambertin (sold for $52,080), as well as the fourth and fifth positions with World Record pricing on three bottles of 1991 Chambertin and an equally impressive 12 bottles of 2005 Chambertin Clos de Bèze, both of which fetched $34,720. In third position was 12 bottles of 1999 Coche-Dury Meursault Perrieres that realized $37,200. DRC returned in sixth and seventh places with one bottle of 1978 and two bottles of 2006 Romanée Conti both selling for $29,760. In eighth place came two magnums of 1997 H. Jayer Vosne Romanée Cros Parantoux that realized $29,760, and the final two positions brought back the DRC fervor with eight bottles of 1998 La Tache and two bottles of 2004 Romanée Conti that each fetched $27,280.
“This was quite the birthday auction, with lots of in room action that kept me feeling younger! It was great to feel so much love in the room,” said Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “It seems hard to believe that there are only two live auctions remaining in this decade before we head into our bicentennial year in 2020. This benchmark year in Acker’s history will be punctuated by incredible celebrations all year long that should not be missed! In reflecting on what we’ve achieved so far and what is still to come, I am so moved by the support of our clients and friends throughout our accomplishments of the past, and the promise held for the future.”
The auction season continues for Acker with “LXXIV” taking place in Hong Kong on December 7th at Grissini at the Grand Hyatt, which will be followed by the last live auction of the decade in New York on Thursday, December 12th at Philippe Chow at the Dream Hotel. Consignment deadlines of December 6th for Hong Kong and January 10th for New York are fast approaching for Acker’s upcoming 2020 live sales, and weekly web auctions are constantly closing and accepting consignments.
