Hong Kong – January 13, 2020 – The international wine community came out in full force for Acker’s first live auction of 2020, “LXXV,” the firm's 75th Hong Kong sale. The two-day auction set the pace for Acker’s Bicentennial Year and the start of Chinese New Year celebrations after closing out 2019 as leading wine auction house of the decade. Collectors both in-person and on the web bid feverishly for the finest wines in the world, notably the world’s most important domaine, Domaine de la Romanee Conti. The firm will officially mark its Bicentennial Year with an auction celebration on February 7th in New York City, slated to feature US $8M of wine, including a fabulous cache of 200 lots direct from 40 of the world’s greatest domaines in honor of its two-century milestone.
Domaine de la Romanee Conti ruled the two-day sale, setting 13 New World Records in total. The Top Ten Lots of the auction were also swept by the Domaine, with six magnums of 1995 Romanée Conti in its original wooden carton taking the top spot of the sale and selling for HKD$1,388,800/USD$178,509. In the second and third positions went to consecutive lots of six bottle OWCs of the 1999 and 2002 Romanée Conti, which fetched HKD$1,091,200/USD$140,257 and HKD$843,200/USD$108,380, respectively.  A rare Jeroboam of 1979 Romanée Conti occupied the fourth slot, while a six bottle OWC of the 2003 vintage came in fifth, both bringing in HKD$793,600/USD$102,005.  The sixth position went to three bottles of the 1999 vintage of Romanee Conti, which sold for HKD$694,400/USD$89,254, and the seventh through tenth spots - all of which fetched HKD$545,600/USD$70,129 – were two magnums of the 1996 La Tache; a twelve-bottle, original wood carton of 1990  La Tache; and three bottle parcel lots of 2005 Romanée Conti in OWC.  Among other standout lots outside of the top ten was a rare magnum of 1971 La Tache, which sold for HKD$248000/US$31,877.
“It's hard to believe that Acker's roots were planted when the United States of America was only 31 years old, and here we stand in 2020, beginning our third century as a company," said Acker Chairman John Kapon.  "Kicking off this historic year in such fine fashion makes this milestone all the more invigorating. It is fantastic to see that demand is still so healthy for the world’s greatest wines - particularly Burgundy - throughout Asia and all over the world. In this January sale, we welcomed the Year of the Rat and a brand new decade, and the celebrations are just getting started!  A series of winemaker events will precede our Bicentennial Auction on February 7th in New York City, where an estimated USD$8 million of wine is lined up, showcasing 200 lots of direct consignments from 40 of the world’s greatest producers. 2020 is going to be another year for the record books, and I am filled with such pride and excitement as Acker starts this exciting new chapter in its history!”
