Hong Kong – March 30, 2020 – Despite a continuing climate of social distancing, China and Hong Kong showed the world that they were ready to get back to business in Acker’s “LXXVI” Hong Kong Auction. The Asian market demonstrated that it still wants its fine and rare wine in Acker’s first foray back to the auction scene in Hong Kong since COVID-19 struck. In the brisk 600-lot, “live online” auction, DRC and rare Japanese whiskies rose to the top as bids were received from all over the globe, led by Chinese buyers.
The Top Lots of the auction were a true hit parade, with a magnum of 1999 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee Conti setting a New World Record when it fetched HKD$446,400/USD$57,231, taking the top slot. The Second place went to parcel lots of twelve bottles of 2005 Chateau Petrus that realized HKD$297,600/USD$38,154. Twelve bottles of 2005 DRC Richebourg came in third place at HKD$272,800/USD$34,974. The fourth through eighth spots returned to the wines of Domaine de la Romanee Conti from the epic 2005 vintage, with parcel lots of six bottles of La Tache realizing HKD$248,000/USD$31,795, and twelve bottles of Grands Echezeaux, another six bottles of La Tache, and twelve bottles of Romanee St. Vivant each selling for HKD$223,200/USD$28,615. There were numerous spirits sold in this auction, and technically tied for fifth while rounding out our Top 8 were three 700mls of 1972 Karuizawa Single Malt Whisky Vintage, which also brought in HKD$223,200/USD$28,615. Another Japanese rare whiskey, one 720ml of 1985 Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt Whisky Ace of Spades captured ninth place at HKD$198,400/USD$25,436, while twelve bottles of 2005 DRC Echezeaux rounded out the Top Ten, selling for HKD$168,640/USD$21,621.
“It was a smaller sale than usual, but the perfect beginning to this new, online era,” said Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “While we cannot wait to host an in-person auction again live in Hong Kong as soon as we can, it was very reassuring to see strong demand across the board in this intimate sale. The three top buyers of the sale were from three different cities in mainland China, which shows that China is ready for business and wants the world’s greatest wines as much as ever. I was encouraged to see numerous lots bid up repeatedly as we got into the heart of the auction. The result of HKD$20 Million in sales was just the tonic the fine wine market needed, and we are very excited for even more action this weekend in New York with a sale of twice as many lots and nearly twice the dollar amount.”
The auction season continues for Acker with another “live online” sale in New York City on Friday and Saturday, April 3rd and 4th. Acker is always accepting wines for consignment. Weekly web auctions are closing every week. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
