NEW YORK, NY (March 9, 2020) – As New York City celebrated a glorious week of vinous celebration, Acker staged its third live auction of the year, recording USD $4.5 million in sales and reaffirming its position as fine wine market leader with nearly $25M in auction sales so far in a vibrant 2020. With the room at Marea bustling with collectors from around the world, it was clear that the wine market showed no signs of slowing down despite global current affairs. Burgundy continued to command the record book as the thirst for rare bottles from the top names in the region cannot be quenched.
The Top Ten Lots of the auction were dominated once again by the esteemed Domaine de la Romanée Conti, setting six New World Records for the Domaine in total. The Top Lot of the sale was captured by twelve bottles of 1990 Domaine de la Romanée Conti Richebourg for $74,400. Second place was taken by an historic three bottles of 1900 Château Margaux selling at an impressive $62,000. The third position went to a record-breaking single Jeroboam of 1971 DRC Richebourg that fetched $52,080. Fourth place returned to Bordeaux, with twelve bottles of Château Petrus, which realized $49,600. The fifth through tenth lots returned to Domaine de la Romanée Conti, with twelve bottle Assortment Cases of the 1988 and 2003 vintages (for which the 2003 set a new record), ten bottles of 1985 La Tache and three bottles of 2001 Romanée Conti all selling for $47,120 each. The Top Ten was rounded out by three bottles of 2000 Romanée Conti and twelve bottles of 1998 La Tache, which realized $43,400 and $39,680 respectively. The additional New World Records for DRC went to one magnum of 1972 Echezeaux that fetched $2,976 and single bottle lots of 1971 Grands Echezeaux, 1973 La Tache and 1983 Echezeaux, which sold for $6,200, $2,728 and $1,612 each.
“I was thrilled to see a packed house at Marea on a beautiful Saturday, despite much volatility in the world today,” said Acker Chairmain John Kapon. “It could not be clearer that people still want their wine. Once again, this was a strong sale amidst a crazy week of Burgundian wine dinners and events in New York City. Though this auction, of course, reiterated the international love of Burgundy, prices for Bordeaux were also exceptional, as collectors are starting to remember that the region still makes the world's most age-worthy wines that are looking like relative values. We are keeping the celebratory spirit going for our Bicentennial year, and I am eagerly anticipating our upcoming Hong Kong auction in just three weeks on Saturday, March 28th. We're going to be back with another spectacular selection of wines for our friends around the globe!”
The auction season continues for Acker with live auctions throughout the spring, and consignments continue to roll in during this historic and monumental year for the auction house. Weekly web auctions are closing every week. Acker’s next live auctions will be March 28th in Hong Kong and April 4th in New York City. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
