New York, NY — May 18, 2020 — New York showed it is as thirsty as ever as Acker held one of its strongest auctions in recent memory, exceeding the overall high estimate for the entire auction with an estimated $3.7M in total sales. Lead by two spectacular collections, The Holy Grail and The Prince of Piedmont, bidders gladly stayed home to participate in Acker’s virtual “live online” auction on Friday night and Saturday morning. Ferocious bidding carried Friday night’s session deep into the night, ending just minutes before midnight, despite an estimated 10:30pm conclusion. This was a true testament to the valiant efforts of numerous buyers to acquire wines from the aforementioned two featured collections, which were the only cellars offered during the Friday night session.
The Top Ten Lots of the auction were a proper ‘who’s who’ of the fine wine world, and Burgundy led the way with the headlining two bottles of 1962 DRC La Tache, which fetched an astonishing $74,400 as two bidders ultimately battled to the bitter end (for one!). Bordeaux pricing was strong throughout the auction, but none stronger than an original wooden case of six magnums of 1989 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, which took second place and a World Record at $39,680. The third and fourth positions were held by wines from the legendary Domaine Leroy with twelve bottles of 1990 Clos de la Roche and twelve of 1990 Vosne Romanee Les Beaux Monts realizing $37,200 and $27,280, respectively. Bold, young Burgundy rallied for the fifth and sixth spots as six bottles each of 2005 A. Rousseau Chambertin and 2006 DRC La Tache sold for $27,280 a piece. Seventh place returned to Domaine Leroy with a second, twelve-bottle lot of 1990 Vosne Romanee Les Beaux Monts that fetched $24,800. Two icons from the Rhone Valley cracked the Top Ten in the eighth and ninth spots, thanks to full cases with outstanding provenance, as twelve bottles of 1989 Chateau Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape and twelve bottles of 1990 J.L. Chave Hermitage sold for $24,800 and $23,560, accordingly. The final slot of the Top Ten returned to another Burgundy legend, with six bottles of 1995 G. Roumier Bonnes Mares fetching $23,560.
An impressive 101 New World Records were set over the course of the two-day auction, nearly 15% of the (non-mixed) lots available. Thanks to one of the featured collections, The Prince of Piedmont, Italy took center stage and snatched up 25% of those New World Records due to rare offerings from only a handful of Piedmont’s best producers. Eight of these records were set by the wines of Giacomo Conterno and seven by Bartolo Mascarello, while Giuseppe Rinaldi, Aldo Conterno, Bruno Giacosa and Vietti accounted for the rest. Other notable names to achieve milestone prices include Petrus, Dujac, Rousseau, DRC, Coche-Dury, Chave, Verset Egon Muller and Vega Sicilia.
“What an auction! I cannot recall an auction with that much real-time bidding,” said Acker Chairman, John Kapon. “All the savvy collectors staying home have the right idea. In this new virtual world that we are in, one thing is for sure: people still want their fine and rare wine, and nothing will stop them from enjoying their passion and seeking out the best that the world has to offer. We are incredibly excited and fortunate to have more big-time collections already lined up for the remainder of our spring season. Our online auction benefitting the United Sommeliers Foundation kicks it off on Monday, May 25th with a ‘live online’ close May 31st, surrounding our Spirits-only sale in Hong Kong on Thursday, May 28th, followed closely by two more ‘live online’ auctions in Hong Kong and New York in June. We are thrilled to continue sharing fine and rare wine with the world through these virtual means and thoroughly excited with the market’s response.”
The auction season continues for Acker with a “live online” Spirits-only auction in Hong Kong on May 28th, with another two-day sale in Hong Kong on June 11th and 13th and in New York on June 24th. Acker is always accepting wines for consignment. Weekly web auctions are closing every week. Acker is hosting Virtual Vintage Tastings with John Kapon on Zoom on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8pm ET and Fridays at 12:30pm ET with some of the food and wine world’s most interesting guests.
