The 2010 Barolo Rocche is as alluring as it has always been. Yes, it is young. Very young. But its greatness simply can’t be denied. Vivid, precise and nuanced to the core, the 2010 simply has it all. Simply put, the 2010 Rocche is an utterly profound wine that captures all of the nobility of Barolo.

This balances cherry and raspberry fruit with leather, tobacco and licorice notes. Elegant and tightly wound, with a refined structure holding the elements together. Exhibits fine length, finishing with spice and mineral details.

Initially closed, it slowly unfolds in the glass to reveal black cherry, espresso, plum, herbs, licorice, mocha and cake spices. Fine but brooding tannins still need time to unwind.

Previously labeled simple as “Rocche,” the 2010 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione now boasts the expanded name of its single vineyard designation. This is a tremendous wine that reaches to the highest aspirations, both in terms of overall complexity and purity. The heft and sheer muscle at the back are irresistible but the wine’s power is irrefutably delivered with grace and intelligence. Delicate mineral nuances of shaved pencil and brimstone add an extra level of aromatic complexity as the wine evolves in the glass. I look forward to tasting this stunning wine after a decade or so of aging.

This is a young Barolo that is very aromatic and fresh with dried flowers, plums and light cloves and nutmeg character. Full body, with firm tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Balanced and refined.

Deep, fresh red. Knockout primary nose offers strawberry, raspberry, smoke, menthol, tobacco and rose petal. Like liquid silk in the mouth, conveying incredible thickness to its youthful fruit flavors. Powerful salty minerality gives this utterly seamless wine uncanny urgency. Finishes with big, dusty, fine-grained tannins and great length. Currado noted that this wine was racked only three times following the malolactic fermentation. A Barolo classic in the making.
