Especial 1 was a new creation for Diego in 2018, and I’m happy to have it for the 2020 vintage! As previously noted, he includes 12% white grapes (Malvasia and Viura) co-fermented with the Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha. An expressive wine that delivers the best from Rioja Alavesa, the deep cherry-red color shows off complex and expressive aromatics redolent of red berry, mineral, sauvauge, and savory, wild spices. Elegant, full-bodied and very long in the mouth, with a complex array of fruit, floral, and mineral sensations on the palate, sweet though etheral tannins and perfectly balanced, it sails through the long finish impressively well. This is one of the more exciting non-denominational Riojas on the market (like his friend David Sampedro Gil, Diego eschews the traditional Crianza -Reserva-Gran Reserva model), not to be missed by Rioja aficionados!
