Mongeard did particularly well in 1991 and this wine underscores that performance well and I particularly like the nose as it's an elegant and complex mix of primary and secondary aromas that offer plenty of Vosne spice along with touches of game, earth and underbrush. The flavors are rich, full and sweet with ample punch, power and length yet the overall impression remains that this is a wine of elegance rather than muscle. Despite the presence of some primary fruit and a bit of unabsorbed wood, for my tastes this wine has arrived at its apogee though it should stay at this plateau for at least another decade. In short, this is really lovely stuff and the four examples that I have had recently have been quite consistent.

Mongeard's brilliance in 1991 continues with his two flagship wines - the Grands Echezeaux and Richebourg. Both are terrific, certainly the best wines he has produced over recent years. The Grands Echezeaux offers a stunning nose of black fruits, flowers, new oak, and minerals. Expansive, with gorgeously rich flavors, a voluptuous texture, and brilliant clarity and precision to its components, this full-bodied, decadently-styled grand cru will provide riveting drinking over the next 10-12 years. These are super efforts from Mongeard-Mugneret and should not be missed. Bravo!
