Neighbors La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion have been rivals for decades, however in 1983 they were joined under one roof by the Dillon family. There is no question that La Mission Haut-Brion is of First Growth quality. Like Haut-Brion, La Mission is one of the most consistently excellent wines even in so called lesser vintages. La Mission is classic Graves. The wines are rich and deeply colored with aromas of scorched earth, tobacco, exotic spice and perfumed minerality. The wines have an uncanny ability to age for decades but because of their inherent opulence, higher percentage of Merlot and enticing bouquet, they can be delicious even when young. The estate has a long history dating back to the 17th century. Most of the wine was sold to dignitaries of the church at this time. One of which was the historic French figure Cardinal de Richelieu who quoted: “If God forbade drinking, would he have made such a good wine?” We will be going back to some of the classic historic vintages of the 1950’s and 60’s.
