HONG KONG – April 4, 2022 – The wine auction market is showing no signs of slowing down as buyers continue to stock their cellars amply with the world’s finest and rarest wines. Acker kicked off April with a sizzling sale in Hong Kong on Saturday, April 2nd, including an impressive selection of Burgundy led by wines direct from the cellars of Gevrey-Chambertin’s newest superstar, Domaine Duroche. Buyers eagerly battled over the Domaine-direct Duroche lots to the tune of 174% above the pre-sale low estimate. Particularly strong demand for exceptional selections of Comte Liger-Belair, Jean-Louis Chave and Domaine Leroy and D’Auvenay set the pace for thirty percent of all eligible lots setting New World Records, including twenty-eight for Leroy (including D’Auvenay and Maison), seventeen for Comte Liger-Belair, and ten all-time highs for Duroche.
It's no surprise that the Top Ten Lots were dominated by Burgundy, but in a rare occurrence, Domaine de la Romanee Conti did not make an appearance. First prize was a four-way tie including eight bottles of rare Chave Cuvee Cathelin Ermitage spanning 1990 to 2010, a historical eleven-bottle vertical of Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee from 2002 to 2012, and eleven and twelve bottles respectively of 1997 D’Auvenay Chaumes de Perrieres Meursault, all hammering at US$77,110. D’Auvenay also took fifth prize with eleven bottles of 1997 Pre De Manche Meursault ringing in at $70,684. Sixth place was awarded to a bottle of 2016 L'Exceptionnelle Vendage des Sept Domaines Montrachet for $57,832, shattering the previous New World Record by well over 50%. The seventh spot went to six bottles of 1988 Leroy Chambertin, achieving $54,619 and also setting a New World Record. D'Auvenay was back again in eighth place with two bottles of 2006 Criots Batard Montrachet fetching $44,981. Finishing off the Top Ten was a tie between a bottle of 2008 Leroy Musigny and a case of 2009 G. Roumier Bonnes Mares, each collecting $41,768 while garnering a New World Record for Roumier.
Digging a little deeper in to the Top Twenty-Five Lots, Chave and Rayas continued to illustrate that they represent the best of the Rhone Valley. The strong showing for these two benchmark producers included a case of 1995 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape, three bottles of 2010 Chave Cathelin, and a magnum of 2010 Cathelin all hammering at an impressive $38,555 with the first two setting New World Records. DRC snuck into the top twenty-five, with four offerings of La Tache, including OWC three-packs of 2005 La Tache achieving $32,129. The one Bordeaux to join the party was a case of 1989 Haut Brion, which also soared to $38,555. Notable lots rounding out the top twenty-five include a bottle of 1996 Leroy Musigny and three magnums of the never-commercially released 2009 Comte Liger-Belair Vosne Romanee Aux Brulees both earning $35,342 and attaining all-time World Records. A separate lot of three magnums of the 2008 Aux Brulees also set a New World Record at $28,916.
“This auction featured a few of my favorite things: Comte Liger-Belair, Jean-Louis Chave, and Domaine Duroche in particular! It was great to see many of our friends live online in Hong Kong, and still very active despite the recent Covid rules and restrictions,” commented Acker Chairman John Kapon. “To top it off, I was able to enjoy a 2016 Duroche Charmes Chambertin during the auction and was amazed at the fruit that Pierre extracted from that vintage – delicious! Pierre Duroche is an exciting young winemaker, but the market already knows that as evidenced by his results this past weekend. Our next sale is just over a week away in Delaware, featuring Rousseau, DRC and Coche-Dury from One of the World’s Greatest Collections and much more. We will see you then!”
Acker’s auction season continues in Delaware on Wednesday and Thursday April 13th and 14th and in Hong Kong on Saturday, April 23rd for a Spirits Auction in support of Hong Kong’s food and beverage business. Acker is currently accepting wines for May auctions, with weekly web auctions closing every week and spirits auctions closing monthly. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
