Acker hosted its final Hong Kong auction of the 2022 season with a significant two-day sale on Friday and Saturday December 9th and 10th. The auction house realized HKD $70M/US $9M in what was the first live sale in Hong Kong in nearly three years. Hundreds of Hongkongers celebrated with Acker Chairman John Kapon and Auction Director Truly Hardy at events throughout the week as Hong Kong’s newly-eased restrictions invited the world back in, and Hong Kong back out. Strong in-person showings in simulcast rooms in Shanghai and Shenzen also accounted for almost 15% of the day’s sales, as Chinese citizens anticipate eased restrictions coming to the Mainland as well. The Top Ten lots in the sale all went to Domaine de la Romanee Conti thanks to the incredible collection of The Emperor, which offered fifty lots of DRC alone, and Compelling Lafite & DRC from a Longstanding Hong Kong Collector.
The number one position in the Top Ten Lots went to a case of 1990 DRC Romanee Conti, which sold for US$282,735. The second position was a tie between a case of 1990 La Tache and a twelve bottle 1990 DRC Assortment in owc, each selling for $77,110. Next in line was a three-way tie with a case of 2005 La Tache and twelve-bottle 1985 and 2000 DRC Assortments in owc each ringing in at $70,684. 1996 DRC rounded out the Top Ten, all in twelve-bottle lots, including an Assortment case in owc bringing in $64,258, one case of 1996 La Tache selling for $54,619, and two separate cases of La Tache each trading for $51,406, one in banded owc. The Top Twenty-five lots went on to include additional DRC, as well as multiple lots of Petrus, and selections from Le Pin, Henri Jayer, and Chateau Rayas.
“Hong Kong is indeed back! Once I settled in, it felt like I never left,” exclaimed Acker Chairman John Kapon. “It was so exciting to be able to see so many great friends and clients, hundreds of people that have not been to events of our scale in years! It was thrilling to bring joy to the people that came out to celebrate, and to share hundreds of bottles of fine and rare wine all week long. I’m already looking forward to my return trip in February when we will offer an even larger slice of the collection of The Emperor. I look forward to returning on a regular basis, and for business to be even better than usual.”
