Acker held its second La Paulée Auction over two action-packed days on February 29 and March 1 last week. The sale included bidding parties in both Los Angeles and New York City, captivating collectors and amassing an impressive $16M in sales, Acker’s 5th largest auction ever. Among the highlights were thirteen prestigious Direct Consignments from Burgundy's most revered Domaines, complemented by a staggering six hundred and fifty lots and $6.2M in sales from A Legendary Offering from an Iconic New York Collector. The auction set an impressive 252 New World Records, including fifty from the aforementioned Burgundy Domaines, nearly 60% of all eligible Domaine-Direct lots.
The Top Ten Lots showcased the celebration of Burgundy, with all but one awarded to none other than Domaine de la Romanee Conti. The number one spot was a historic moment as the first barrel ever offered by Domaine Duroche, the 2023 Gevrey Chambertin Lavaut St. Jacques Vieilles Vignes, fetched a remarkable $150,000, surging past initial estimates. The second through fourth positions went to DRC Romanee Conti, including six bottles of 2005, six bottles of 1991, and two magnums of 2005 selling for $112,500, $106,250, and $100,000, respectively. The DRC lineup continued with six magnums of 2010 La Tache commanding fifth place at $87,500, while a jeroboam of 1971 Richebourg and a magnum of 1971 Romanee Conti each fetched an impressive $75,000, the Richebourg setting a New World Record. Rounding out the Top Ten Lots was a three-way tie from DRC with six magnums of 2009 La Tache, three bottles of 2015 Romanee Conti, and one bottle of 1934 Romanee Conti, a New World Record, all achieving $68,750.
Out of the 252 New World Records set, fifty originated from Domaine-Direct selections, representing sixty percent of eligible lots. Every producer set New World Records, and the producers present at the auction, including Clerget, Jobard and Hudelot-Noellat, witnessed the feverish atmosphere in the room, resulting in astonishing prices particularly for their offerings.
A Legendary Offering from an Iconic New York Collector brought with it exceptional Champagne lots, culminating in sixty-one total New World Records for Champagne. Noteworthy among these were thirteen for Krug, twelve for Moet & Chandon, eight for Roederer, and five for Salon. Significant results included a bottle of 1929 Krug Collection selling for $40,000, a bottle of 1921 Dom Perignon for $10,000, a magnum of 1976 Cristal Rose for $5,000, a bottle of 1921 Moet for $11,250, and a magnum of 1966 Salon for $8,125.
"What a spectacular auction! La Paulée always brings out the best of Burgundy producers and collectors, and this year was no exception. Acker's auction season continues with the Year of the Dragon Auction on March 15-16 in Hong Kong with simulcasts in Shanghai and Bangkok, followed by a US sale on April 11.
