LEROY AND POMEROL DOMINATE TOP LOTS AS MARKET SURGES EVEN HIGHER
139 New World Records Set, $6.75M+ Sold

Lot 714: 12 bottles D’Auvenay (Leroy) Chevalier Montrachet in OWC
Lot 350: 12 bottles 1982 Château Lafleur in OWC
Lot 385: 1 Imperial 2000 Chateau Petrus in OWC
DELAWARE – March 15, 2021 – Acker’s third Delaware auction on last Thursday and Friday evenings continued the surge of interest and activity in the fine and rare wine market, achieving $6.76 million in sales while setting 139 New World Records. While Burgundy has been the belle of the auction ball recently, over 40% of the New World Records achieved were for wines from outside the region, as Champagne, Bordeaux, and California also electrified the sales floor in what is indubitably a bull market in this new Year of the Ox.
The Top Ten Lots of the sale were all about Madame Lalou Bize Leroy and Bordeaux’s Pomerol region. Of course, one lot of Domaine de la Romanee Conti slipped in for good measure, but it was not littered amongst the Top Ten as usual. Leading the pack was twelve bottles of 1996 D’Auvenay (Leroy) Chevalier Montrachet in original wood, which sold for $105,825, a New World Record. The second position was shared by three lots, as twelve bottles each of 1982 Chateau Lafleur, and cases of 1997 and 1998 D’Auvenay (Leroy) Chevalier Montrachet, all in OWC, realized $87,150 a piece, the latter two being New World Records. Holding the fifth position stood one, World Record-setting Imperial of 2000 Chateau Petrus in OWC, at $80,925, followed by twelve bottles of 2005 DRC La Tache that brought in $68,475. A three-way tie occurred once more for seventh place, as parcels of twelve bottles of 1996 D’Auvenay (Leroy) Mazis Chambertin, another New World Record, and twelve bottles of 1997 Domaine Leroy Richebourg each sold for $62,250. Rounding out the Top Ten was a stand-alone and yet another Record-setting, six bottles of 1996 Domaine Leroy Chambertin that fetched $52,290. An incredible seven of the Top Ten results went to Madame Leroy through her two Domaines.
Champagne Delamotte and Salon set a high bar for the Champagne market, as a special selection purchased by a single collector directly from the House garnered five records for apiece for Salon and Delamotte, including twelve bottles of 1985 Delamotte Collection in OWC that realized $7,470 and six magnums of 2002 Salon Le Mesnil in OWC that fetched $17,430. Additionally, an experiential super-lot boasting a luxurious meal for six at the House of Salon, along with magnum cases of the recently disgorged 1970 and 1983 Delamotte Collection, in addition to magnum cases of 2002, 2004, and 2006 Salon realized $47,310. The wines of Domaine Leroy and D’Auvenay topped the record books overall, attaining sixteen new records in total. Bordeaux continued to ascend as well, catching the wave while securing eight entries amongst the Top 25 Lots of the sale, Including six magnums of 1982 Château Latour for $47,310 and twelve bottles of 1989 Château Haut Brion for $29,880.

Every segment of the market is exploding past the estimates, and the collections coming to auction are superlative in every regard. No sale exemplifies this notion more than the single cellar sale of the Brilliant Collection of the Golden Bull that will take place in just two weeks’ time in Hong Kong on March 27th. We have another US$10 million lined up for April, as the world’s finest collectors continue to choose Acker to sell and buy their wine.”
