Three of the top performing lots in the September HK Auction:
Lot 840: 12 bottles 2009 Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant in OWC
Lot 831: 3 bottles 2015 DRC Romanee Conti in banded OWC
Lot 915: 12 bottles 1961 Chateau Palmer in OWC

Hong Kong brought the big-time this past week with a high energy turnout as nearly 200 buyers showed up live in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, where life has gone more back to normal compared with the rest of the world. An impressive HK$57 Million/US$7 Million of fine wines traded, including forty-nine lots of the auction selling above US$20,000. The market continued to be “All About the Burgundy,” which dominated 82% of the 142 New World Records set at the auction.

However, gorgeous original cases of rare, old Bordeaux took two of the three Top Ten Lots of the sale, with a pristine, twelve bottles of 1961 Chateau Palmer coming in first place at HK$694,400/US$89,600. The second and third positions were a tie between twelve bottle original cases of 1961 Chateau Mouton Rothschild and 2009 Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant, which each realized HK$545,600/US$70,400. Fourth through sixth places went to three bottles each of 2015, 2001, and 2006 DRC Romanee Conti all in original wood cases, and all selling respectively for HK$496,000/US$64,000 (2015), and HK$421,600/US$54,400 for the latter two. In seventh place was some white wine from one of its most heralded producers, twelve bottles of 2004 Coche-Dury Corton Charlemagne that realized HK$396,800/US$51,200. Four lots tied for seventh place, rounding out the Top Ten, as twelve bottles of 1962 Maison Leroy La Romanee, six bottles of DRC La Tache, three parcel lots of twelve bottles of 1982 Chateau Petrus, and twelve bottles of 1990 Chateau Petrus each sold for HK$347,200/US$44,800.

Burgundy continues to dominate the auctions with increasing fervor each month. 47% of the sale’s overall dollars, 82% of the New World Records, and eighteen of the Top 25 lots were all Burgundy. Most notably, 23 New World Records were set by the wines of Lalou Bize Leroy, while Domaine Leflaive procured 21 New World Records as well. Bordeaux’s share of the overall dollars was also up and closer to Burgundy than recent trends, with 45% of dollars traded thanks to some significant featured collections of almost exclusively Bordeaux.

“What a big-time sale! It’s all about the Burgundy right now,’ Acker Chairman John Kapon gushed. “Any and every bottle from the region is on fire as scarce supply and increased demand have been accelerated by the pandemic and people drinking better and more often at home. The bidding fervor for Burgundy wines is without question stronger than anything else. Burgundy lovers will be pleased as October will feature two spectacular auctions in New York. The first on October 8th will be a single cellar auction featuring the Collection of the Golden Phoenix: Phoenix Rising. Two weeks later we will host another auction on Saturday, October 24th which contains four spectacular collections of, you guessed it — Burgundy! This Fall season continues to get more and more exciting.”

The auction season continues for Acker with a “live online” auction in New York on October 8th and a second October New York auction on October 24th. Acker is currently accepting wines for November and December “live online” auctions, with weekly web auctions closing every week. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com.
