HONG KONG ELECTS TO BUY MORE FINE AND RARE WINE AT ACKER MERRALL’S NOVEMBER HK AUCTION

Hong Kong, SAR – June 12, 2017 – Acker Merrall’s 55th Hong Kong auction achieved a lucky HK$55 Million as Asian collectors came out in droves live in four cities at Acker Asia’s last live auction of the first half of 2017. Over 150 World Records were set, with nine coming from a special consignment direct from the cellars of Comte Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, whose consignment soared more than 30% above the high estimate, and which would have set more World Records were it not for all the custom, mixed lot cases comprising the offering.  Some extraordinary Chateau Latour lots, spanning 1928-2009 that were acquired directly from the Chateau via a 2011 Hong Kong auction, also soared through the high estimates, as buyers continued to seize the moment in this bull market, acquiring the best wines from the best cellars, with prices becoming a secondary factor.

Burgundy and Bordeaux battled all day for the headlines, as illustrated by the sale’s Top Ten Lots.  The auction’s Top Lot was a beautiful six bottle lot of famed 1945 Mouton Rothschild with excellent provenance, and it was ultimately bought for HK$889,200/US$114,735, while a twelve bottle OCB of 1996 Henri Jayer Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux sold for HK$839,800/US$108,361.  A Superlot of 33 double magnums of 1970-2000 Mouton Rothschild followed, selling for HK$716,300/US$92,426. Next was an imperial of 1961 Chateau Latour from the aforementioned collection of Latour that achieved  HK$543,400/US$70,116, while a six bottle, banded OWC of 1928 Chateau Latour sold for HK$494,000/US$63,742.  A forty-three magnum Superlot of 1973-2013 Mouton Rothschild went for HK$444,600/US$57,368, which was followed by another stellar example of the direct from Chateau Latour consignment in the form of a jeroboam of 1961 Chateau Latour at HK$395,200/US$50,994. That made six out of the seven Top Lots Bordeaux, reversing the usual trend of DRC and Burgundy domination of late, showing that a Bordeaux boom may be on the horizon.  However, Burgundy took the last three spots of the Top Ten balancing the scales a bit, with an OWC of 1999 DRC Assortment selling for HK$370,500/US47,806, as did four magnums of 1993 Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze, which nipped a three bottle OWC of 2008 Romanee Conti that sold for HK$345,800/US$44,619.

While the increased appetite for Bordeaux was noticeable, Burgundy still dominated the World Records, accounting for a whopping 125 of the 153 overall. Domaine de la Romanee Conti accounted for twenty-four new World Records, followed by Domaine Leroy and Domaine Leflaive with eleven each, and Coche-Dury also had nine. Pomerol led the way for Bordeaux, achieving 18 new World Records led by Le Pin’s seven, and only trailing Vosne Romanee itself for new World Records for an appelation.

“What an exciting auction, they just keep coming!  So many live attendees said the same, and Hong Kong showed that it is also ‘Hungry like the Wolf’ when it comes to its finest and rarest wines. We had almost 400 live registrants attending in four cities, and while we had no more to offer from Wolfgang Grunewald’s collection, collectors continued to seize the moment and buy, buy, buy.  With all the incredible cellars coming to market right now, I don’t blame them, and this sale equaled Wolfgang’s auction for our highest grossing sale of the year,” said Acker Merrall and Condit Companies Chairman John Kapon. “It is always a privilege and honor to offer wines direct from the cellars of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, as his wines are arguably the most delicious in Burgundy today, and buyers recognized accordingly.  If you see his wines anywhere, any place, I have one suggestion: buy immediately!  And the offering of Chateau Latour back to 1928, along with the sale’s top lot of 1945 Mouton, showed that Bordeaux is back in a big way.  The little interest in the 2016 futures market has translated into stronger interest in wines from the 20th Century that already have some bottle age.  Without question, both the Hong Kong and New York markets are on fire this year.  I think it is going to be an amazing Fall season, but first things first: June 20th and 21st in NYC has over $5 million of wine available! When good things happen in the market, great collections follow, and they continue to choose Acker Merrall.”

Acker Merrall’s next NYC auction of 2017 will be held on June 20th and June 21st with an internet only session on the 20th.   For more information about that upcoming auction or consigning your collection, please visit www.ackerwines.com.
