The 1995 Maya is a bit like the 1991 in that the aromas are maturing, while the fruit retains a very classic sense of Maya breadth. Sweet tobacco, cedar, incense, dried flowers and worn-in leather add nuance to the resonant finish. The 1995 has enough depth to drink well for at least another handful of years, but I wouldn't push my luck too much beyond that. At this point, it is pretty clear the tannins are always going to retain an element of firmness.

Deep ruby. Floral aromas of blackberry, cassis and mint, plus a pungent oak note of mace. Less dense than the '96 but extremely intensely flavored and penetrating. Fruit-driven wine, less sweet than the '96 despite a flavor of dark chocolate. Gives an impression of higher acidity, like so many '95s. Tannins are currently a bit spiky and in need of cellaring.

Dark, intense and deeply concentrated, with a sharp, tight beam of currant, blackberry and cherry, complex and spicy. The tannins are woven in, giving it seamless texture, and the finish pumps out lots of juicy fruit. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The terrific 1995 Maya is cut from the same mold as all the great Mayas of this decade. Its tannin may be even riper than in the 1994, but the wine is still an unevolved, massive, and unformed giant, although it is obvious that this will be another legendary effort.
