A worthy successor to the 2014 vintage extolled a couple of years ago by yours truly, the 2017 Escolma Blanco has a bit of Lado to complement the Treixadura, AlbariƱo and Godello, all from old, low-yielding vines. Deep straw-gold in color, it shows off a complex aromatic bouquet, with bee pollen, quince, orange blossom, gingerbread, chalky minerals, and crushed stones emenating from the glass. The pungent minerality and searing acids complement bright, tangy citrus and pear pit flavors; this drinks like a traditional Chablis, with that same vibrant cut and clarity but with a floral and sweet yellow plum note from the Godello that makes it distinctively Spanish. The zesty mineral notes hang around for nearly a minute, finishing with lemon and tangerine notes lingering effortlessly.
