Join us as we dive into the iconic wines of Italy!

"Viva Italia!"

Antonio Galloni of Vinous

To kick off this exciting week of virtual tastings, we are honored to have the greatest authority on Italian wines himself, Antonio Galloni of Vinous, set the tone for Acker’s first Viva Italia! Antonio has tasted Italian wines since his youth, when the number of elite producers was relatively small. Since then, the category has exploded and elevated to new heights, as new producers have been discovered, maximizing the potential of native varieties and making wines that represent the essence of place. Antonio will join us for a fascinating evening, where he’ll lend his decades of Italian wine drinking expertise not only to set the stage of our Viva Italia auction, but also to focus two of the estates included in our direct consignments, Ceretto and Quintarelli. After spending many years with the country’s greatest winemakers, we’ll be sure to get some exceptional stories from Antonio as we begin an incredible week of Italian wine tasting!

WINES Include:

2019 Quintarelli Bianco Secco
2016 Ceretto Barbaresco Asili
2007 Ceretto Barolo Bricco Rocche
2007 Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella Classico A Roberto 375ml

Bruna Giacosa of Bruno Giacosa

The late Bruno Giacosa produced some of Italy’s most renowned wines, and many argue that he put the wines of Piedmont of the world stage of quality wine. A witness to Piedmont’s transformation from impoverished agricultural community post-World War II to the flourishing wine haven it is today, Bruno was an innovator in his own rite, as he embraced single-cru bottlings of Barolo and Barbaresco, incorporated French oak, and modernized his cellar early on. The Giacosa wines can be transcendent, capturing the essence of Barolo or Barbaresco in a unique and understated way. Though Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, the winery is now managed by his daughter, Bruna, while Bruno’s protege and longtime enologist, Dante Scaglione, serves as a consultant. The wines have not skipped a beat and continue to be some of the purest expressions of Nebbiolo ready to age for decades to come. We welcome this opportunity to taste through several of the top crus from the Giacosa portfolio as a prelude to some tremendous large formats for sale in our auction!

WINES Include:

2017 Barbaresco Asili
2017 Barolo Falletto
2014 Barolo Vigna Le Rocche Riserva

Axel Heinz of Ornellaia

Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, the Ornellaia estate is tucked in Tuscany’s foothills near the Mediterranean coast. The estate has always maintained a terroir-focus to its winemaking, incorporating and expressing the unique marine, alluvial, and volcanic soils in Bolgheri’s maritime climate. Ornellaia specializes in international grape varieties expressed under an Italian lens. Estate Director, Axel Heinz, who previously worked in Bordeaux at Chateau Palmer, has been at Ornellaia since 2005, masterfully steering this storied property to its greatest heights. Their flagship wine is a Bordelaise blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, ideally balanced to preserve freshness, with a second wine, Le Serre Nuove, on offer since the 1997 vintage, in addition to Ornellaia Bianco, Le Volte, and a unique dessert wine, Ornus.
