Born and raised in New York City, Sam is a private client specialist, and holds the title of Acker’s resident Spanish wine expert. Sam’s Acker tenure began in 2007, and his passion and expertise are rooted in the great wines of Spain, as well as the world’s great white wines. He has traveled to Europe (and particularly, to Spain) many times since beginning his journey into wine, and has written about his tasting experiences and adventures for Acker’s Wine Club program and beyond.
2020 C. Bellang & Fils Savigny Les Beaune Rouge 750ml
The Bellang family’s history in the Côte de Beaune dates back to the late 18th century! Christian Bellang assumed ownership of his family’s estate in 1974; the Bellang holdings are situated mostly in Meursault. Christian and his son Christophe has expanded to choice holdings in Beaune, Chorey-lès-Beaune, and Savigny-lès-Beaune, and they now hold sway over nine hectares. As the majority of the parcels are planted with vines averaging 30 years of age, they bear the moniker of Vieilles Vignes.
The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune, from 35-year-old vines planted to clay and limestone soils, was aged 12 months in barrel and 6 months in vat before bottling. The bouquet sings of classic Savigny, with wild cherry, plum, raspberry, and red floral notes, and a hint of iron. The palate is awash with earthy tones, lovely fresh acidity, and juicy cherry and raspberry flavors. The finish is long and silky. This is a delightful young Burgundy, meant to be drunk younger with salmon, tuna, roast chicken, or duck, and easy enough to sip on its own!

2022 P. Lauer Riesling Feinherb No. 3 Ayler 750ml
The Saar region lies in the cold tributary just south of Mosel proper; despite the close proximity, for many years most thought it was too cold there to make great dry wines. Enter Florian Lauer of Peter Lauer, who has taken apart that theory and set the world on fire in the past decade, producing terroir-centric dry wines and Grosses Gewächs whilst taking the opposite approach from his famous Saar neighbors. Weingut Egon Müller and Weingut Falkenstein. Early harvests and natural yeast fermentations keep the wines honest, but the key is the land, the soils, the climats—that's where you find the distinctiveness here, and why these racy, mineral-driven, and crystalline wines are some of Germany's most sought after!
His Riesling No. 3 Ayler Feinherb is a half-dry wine, some would say, “off-dry” wine, with 31 grams of residual sugar. Aromatically, it has an attractive bouquet of earthy spices, grapefruit, and lime with hints of mint and white pepper. Juicy acids and fresh citrus flavors with notes of spice are present on the palate, also boasting refreshing background mineral notes and a long, zesty finish. This is the perfect Riesling accompaniment to Thai, Malaysian, Filipino, or other spice-driven fare!

2022 Terre Nere Etna Rosso 750ml
Owned by famed Italian importer Marc de Grazia, Tenuta delle Terre Nere was one of the first estates to put Etna Rosso wines on the map for the United States. Situated upon the northern slopes of Mount Etna, the estate is actually a patchwork of the various terrains in this esteemed DOCG of Sicily. All of the wines here are made according to tradition; no chemicals or preservatives, no fining or filtering, just ‘juice of the earth.’ Nerello Mascalese is the varietal here, and we find in his ‘entry level’ offering a pretty wine, with a deep ruby color and enticing fragrance of ripe red morello cherries and baking spices with hints of white pepper and cocoa.
The palate shows off refreshing acidity, balanced red fruits with some blackberry preserve notes, and an earthy, elegant mid-palate with a fine finish. Etna Rossos are the perfect foil to red sauce pasta dishes, and this is no exception as a good choice for lasagna, pizza, charcuterie, or Italian cheeses, particularly a nice Fontina or Reggiano!
